SWIMMING POOL FENCING - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Your glass fence is only safe if it’s made out of high quality material.
- Pool fencing regulations in Western Australia: Construction of glass fencingsurrounding swimming pools is governed by the Building Regulations 1989 Part 10 38B which is enforced by the local government. The fencing laws demand restricting access to the swimming pool area from outside the property, from within buildings on the property and the rest of the backyard.
- Glass pool fencing and normal pool fencing must conform with the Australian Standard AS1926.1 - Swimming Pool Safety (see below).
- In addition to the above, all glass material must comply with another Australian Standard AS2208 - Safety Glazing Materials in Buildings (see below).
- To make things easy, Building Industry Development WA has produced a number of publications to assist swimming pool and spa owners, as well as local government swimming pool inspectors, understand swimming pool and spa barrier requirements. One of these, “Rules for Pools” can be downloaded below.
- In addition to the above, the glass fence must comply with any other requirements imposed by local councils. It's a good idea to give them a call to make sure there is nothing extra you need to do around your pool.
Here is a practice note released by the Building Commission in April 2011 that outlines the safety requirements for swimming pool barriers in WA. This is an easy to use guideline that can be used together with any other information you can get from your local city council.
RULES FOR POOLS
The Department of Housing and Works of Western Australia produced a booklet called “Rules for Pools” - the guidelines for the interpretation of swimming pool fencing requirements. The document describes the fence height and other security requirements. You will find that Safety & Style™ comply with the requirements outlined in that document. It is, however, recommended to check with your council or shire for any other fencing obligations your area may have.
Australian Standard AS2208
Our glass pool fencing products conform with the Australian Standard AS2208 - Safety Glazing Materials in Buildings.
AS2208 is a standard test performed on glass by creating impact on the glass using a 46kg bag to simulate human impact. The glass must be strong enough to withstand that. In addition, if broken, the fractures of glass must be harmless enough to minimize the likelihood of injuries.
You can find out more at www.standards.org.au.
